Using a structured literacy approach to provide
intervention/therapy for learners with a dyslexic profile

Who is this course for?
This course is designed for educators who would like to upskill their knowledge of using
structured literacy using the Science of Reading as a foundation to teach people with
literacy and language challenges.
This certification is ideal for:
● Educators, interventionists, and speech pathologists seeking formal training in
structured literacy
● Teachers who support students with dyslexia or reading difficulties
● Learning support staff and tutors wanting to deepen their diagnostic and intervention teaching skills
What will I learn by participating in this course?
This evidence-based certification equips educators with the theory, understanding, and
practical skills to assess, plan, and deliver structured literacy therapy. You will develop a
deep understanding of effective literacy instruction and gain the practical knowledge to
work with learners who have a dyslexic profile.
Specifically, you will have an in-depth understanding of the following topics.
Literacy acquisition
● Past and present research concerning how we learn to read.
● The theories of reading aquisition.
● The stages of normal language and reading acquisition.
● Components of effective instruction: phonological awareness, phonemic
awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and how these
interrelate
Understanding Dyslexia and Related Profiles
● Characteristics of dyslexic learners
● Impact of dyslexia on academic progress and life skills
● Neurological underpinnings of dyslexia
● Influence of slow processing speed and working memory on reading
● Other learning profiles impacting literacy: ADHD, dysgraphia, dyscalculia,
hyperlexia
Understand The History of the English Language and how it impacts its structure
● A knowledge of the history of the English language
● How other languages influence the English language
The Principles of the Structured Literacy Approach
● An overview of how we apply the principles of structured language and literacy to
teaching- explicit, systematic, cumulative, sequential, mastery-orientated,
diagnostic, and multimodal.
● The content of a structured literacy approach:
– Phonological and phonemic awareness
– Phonemes and graphemes that make up the English language
– Phonics and word recognition, including considerations for the structure of
– English orthography and the patterns and rules that inform the teaching of single and multisyllabic words, syllable types and irregular word patterns
– Morphology
– Fluency techniques for fluent word reading skills and oral reading.
– Vocabulary development
– Comprehension strategies
– Written expression, including understanding research-based principles forteaching letter formation and sentence structures

The lesson plan
● Individualised lessons based on the student’s assessment and performance.

– Symbol to sound and sound to symbol
– Reading words in isolation and within sentences and phrases
– Spelling of dictated words in isolation and connected text
– Review of previous concepts
– Direct instruction of new concepts
– Incorporation of decodable texts
● Error correction techniques
● Maintaining records of student performance and using the notes to write
subsequent lessons.
Assessment
● Purpose and types of assessments
● Administering diagnostic surveys and interpreting the errors
● Using assessment data to plan scope and sequences of instruction
● Using assessment information to write diagnostic reports.
What is my time commitment to participate in this course?
Theory Component
● Self-paced online introductory unit before face-to-face training
● 45 hours total:
○ 5 intensive face-to-face training days (After this time, participants will feel
confident to begin working with students)
○ Minimum 30 hours delivered by direct instruction
○ Remaining hours include self-paced learning, follow-up tasks, and readings
to consolidate and expand on the initial 5 day intensive training
Participants can also opt for a follow-up practicum.
Practicum Requirements
You will complete:
● Minimum 40 hours working with a practicum student over a minimum of 8 months
● Additional 40 hours experience with other students
For your practicum student, you will
● Submit 10 lesson plans, including 3 observed lessons (45–60 mins each) either
face-to-face or via video. You will be given oral and written feedback
● Conduct a pre- and post-assessment and write a diagnostic initial report and a
summary of progress at the end of the required hours

Post-Course Support
● Email Follow-Up Assistance: After the course is complete, you’ll have ongoing
support via email to troubleshoot challenges, refine lesson planning, and receive
guidance on structured literacy delivery.
This ensures that your certification isn’t just theory — you’ll have everything you need to
teach, assess, and support students confidently from day one.
Qualifications & Recognition
Participants who complete both the theory and practical components of the TTL
Structured Literacy & Dyslexia Therapist Certification are eligible to apply to the Australian
Dyslexia Association (ADA) to have their services listed on the ADA website.
This provides:
● Recognition as a trained provider in structured literacy and dyslexia intervention
● Inclusion in a national data bank, making your services visible to schools, parents,
and educators across Australia
● Professional validation of your expertise in evidence-based literacy instruction
